Te Kohanga Manaaki - Petone Playscape

Te Kōhanga Manaaki is designed around sensory and imaginative play rather than conventional climbing frames. The centrepiece is a set of mud kitchens where children dig, mix and create; alongside these are sand play areas, water pumps, and a wooden playhouse. A double slide encourages children to play together. The fully fenced layout is sized for under-fives, making it one of the few dedicated toddler playspaces in the lower Hutt region.

Access and Inclusion

The site is fully fenced with a safety gate, giving parents confidence that young children stay within the play area. The central Petone location at 72 Cuba Street is within a short walk of the train station and local bus stops, with on-street parking available nearby. The playground is open every day from 7am to 7pm.

History and Cultural

The name Te Kohanga Manaaki translates roughly as "The Caring Nest": kohanga (nest or nurturing environment) and manaaki (to extend respect and uplifting care to others). The project was conceived by Salvation Army Petone Corps Planting leaders Envoys Collette and Stewart Irwin, who used spare land beside the Cuba Street corps building. Community surveys confirmed the need for a dedicated under-fives space and the play space was built through neighbourhood working bees, opening in May 2021. Envoy Stew Irwin has described families using it as a social anchor: "We hear whispers of people finding friendships and connections. People moving to the area, and it has become their safe space."

In May 2026, the 4.5 km Te Ara Tupua walking and cycling path from Ngauranga to Petone opened, placing Te Kohanga Manaaki at the Petone terminus of the $348.7 million NZTA coastal route.

Practical Info

Hamodava Coffee Co. shares the site and operates an on-site coffee cart, confirmed open on Saturdays. Toilets are available. Bring spare clothes for mud and water play. The playground is close to Petone cafes, shops, and the Esplanade.
