Harcourt Park

Harcourt Park stretches out beside the Hutt River on Akatarawa Road in Birchville, a big, leafy Upper Hutt reserve where a genuinely large playground splits into junior and senior zones, backed by a summer splash pool and a mini road circuit for young cyclists. Wide lawns and mature trees make it an easy pick for a full afternoon out, and film fans will recognise the setting the moment they walk in.

Equipment

Older kids gravitate to the long, fast flying fox that anchors the senior play area, backed up by climbing nets, an overhead spinner, a tubular slide and swings. A separate junior zone keeps smaller children occupied with their own small multi play structures, a basket swing, infant swings and spring toys. In summer a fenced splash pool with a mini slide and sprays runs from ten in the morning until seven at night, and a miniature road system with humps and a roundabout gives young cyclists somewhere safe to practise.

Access and Inclusion

The playground is fully wheelchair accessible throughout, a rare and welcome standard for a play area this size, meaning caregivers and children using mobility equipment are not limited to watching from the sidelines. Wide paths and level ground link the junior and senior play zones with the splash pool and picnic areas, so a family can move between them without detours.

History and Cultural

The land was gifted to the city by C.J. Stanton Harcourt, and the playground picked up the New Zealand Institute of Park and Recreation Administration's top award in 1989 for its holiday park facilities. Its gardens also found international fame as the Gardens of Isengard in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, including the scene where Gandalf and Saruman debate Sauron's return; crews rigged mature trees on hinged bases so they could topple on cue for filming, then restored everything once shooting wrapped, so the trees seen on screen still stand today.
