A brand-new destination playground in the gold-rush town of Lawrence, South Otago, the playground on Whitehaven Street is one of the most thoughtfully designed play spaces in the Clutha District. It opened in the summer of 2024-25 after a four-year community campaign, replacing an ageing installation that had not been updated in more than two decades, and the transformation is striking.

Fantastic new playground. Includes slides, swings (including some baby and toddler friendly ones), merry go round, climbing structure and a quarry toy (never seen one of these before!). With the quarry toy they can use a chain and pulleys to load up buckets with stones, lift them and then pour them down chutes. Lots of shade available, plus picnic tables. There's a drinking water fountain, but it doesn't work unfortunately. Public toilets are a short walk away. There's an homage to Sultan and Sonia, lions which escaped a circus while it was visiting Lawrence. You can see the taxidermied Sultan and Sonia at Tuhura Otago Museum in Dunedin.
