Best playgrounds in Kaikoura

Where the Seaward Kaikoura Range drops straight into the Pacific, the town's playgrounds sit close enough to walk between. Gooches Beach Playground is the default, a compact set on the Esplanade with swings, a slide and a climbing frame, plus a bike track and toilets, the tide a few steps off the sand. A second playground on Whaleway Station Road serves the residential streets inland, a smaller slide and climbing set handy when the sea wind gets sharp on the front.

The playground near Kaikoura Health on Deal Street is the practical one, a quiet set by the hospital helipad for a family visiting rather than a special trip. When weather turns, the Aquatic Centre on Wa Kaukau Terrace is the fallback most parents reach for, its outdoor splash pad built around a giant blue whale tail spout. Whale watch tours run year round and the town fills up over summer, so a Gooches Beach visit is easiest outside the January to February peak.
