Adventure Playground in Awapuni is the one local kids ask for by name, packing two full obstacle courses, a run of classic swings and slides, and a gated mini road system where under-fours can pedal a loop without bigger kids barrelling through. It shares the western beach flat with Waikanae Beach Playground on Grey Street, which splits into three zones for toddlers, primary-agers and older kids and adds a bike track with mini road signs, public toilets and enough parking to matter on a January Saturday. Both sit steps from the swimmable sand, so the play is the natural stop after a beach walk.

The waterfront carries the rest of the marquee stops. Marina Park at Whataupoko is built around a lighthouse structure with a tunnel slide, a climbing net and a vertical scramble, plus a sandy digging patch and baby bucket swings for the little ones. Churchill Park, a bit further along Centennial Marine Drive, backs straight onto the beach with a water-play feature and clear-day views across to the Mahia Peninsula.

Inland and up the Kaiti hill, the suburb plays trade size for shade, which counts for a lot in one of the country's sunniest cities. Anzac Park Playground in Inner Kaiti has genuine tree cover over its rocktopus climber, small carousel and swings. Ayton Park in Te Hapara sits under established trees with climbing frames, seesaws and an infant swing, and Mangapapa Reserve adds a slide, an overhead ladder and its own toilets. Waikirikiri Park in Outer Kaiti is the pick if you need an accessibility swing, and it pairs the play with a bike track.

Bring hats and expect the sun to bite from late morning October through April. Waikanae and Adventure both have shade trees but not full cover until mid-afternoon, so the tree-canopied suburb plays are the safer midday call. Toilets are easy at Waikanae and Mangapapa, thin elsewhere, and the inner-city carparks fill first on a hot weekend, with the beach-end spaces the reliable fallback.
