Best playgrounds in Tararua

Pahiatua's newest play space skips fixed equipment altogether. Loose Parts Play hands kids loose materials, tyres among them, to build and rearrange, a different session every visit rather than one fixed structure to climb. A few streets over, Harvard Adventure Park keeps the Main Street crowd, its yellow Harvard trainer plane and fenced toddler corner covering the widest age range in the district. Between the two, most Pahiatua families can fill a whole morning without leaving town.

Woodville, where State Highways 2 and 3 meet at the western edge of the district, has its own stop at Fountaine Square. The playground there was recently reworked with new equipment scaled for toddlers through to primary schoolers, plus picnic tables and toilets under the square's heritage trees. It is Tararua's other real playground beyond Pahiatua, a handy break for anyone crossing between the Wairarapa and Palmerston North. With only three real playgrounds spread across a farming district this size, packing lunch and planning around school hours is the norm.
