Playgrounds in Central Otago

Anderson Park's flying fox is the ride Central Otago kids talk about on the drive home, and it's the reason Cromwell pulls families in from Clyde, Alexandra and the wider lake district for an afternoon on the equipment alone. A short walk away, Alpha Street Reserve sits right on Lake Dunstan, with a picnic area and lake view for the grown-ups while the kids run the swings and climbing frame. Out at Pisa Moorings, Mount Pisa Playground serves the lakeside settlement on the road toward Wanaka, nine kilometres northeast of Cromwell, shaded and built more for school-age climbers than toddlers. In Alexandra's town centre, Table Top Playground keeps it simple: a timber fort, swings and a stretch of grass under mature trees that take the edge off the market-town heat.

Pioneer Park Playground, split into fenced junior and senior zones with a climbing net and rocking horses, is Alexandra's other option a few streets over. Down the Clutha in Roxburgh, Roxburgh Memorial Park Playground is the town's one fenced play space, shaded by mature oaks and set up for toddlers through school age. Parking is easy at every one of these, this stays small-town scale, nothing like Queenstown an hour up the road. Summers run hot and dry, so plan for dawn or dusk visits and check the shade before midday. Spring through autumn is the easier season.
