About Kapiti Coast

What it's like for kids.

Raumati South's Lorna Irene Drive Reserve won national Playground of the Year in 2023 against entries with six times its budget, built around New Zealand's first wheelchair seesaw and a fenced run of climbing, water play and a separate toddler corner. It sets the standard for a coast where good design shows up in small suburban reserves as often as big parks. Up at Paraparaumu Beach, Kotuku Park's pirate-ship climbing structure looks straight out at Kāpiti Island, and the same theme repeats further north at Tasman Road in Ōtaki Beach, where another ship-shaped climber sits a short walk from the sand. Inland at Mazengarb Reserve, a climbing web and flying fox for the older kids sit well clear of a fenced toddler patch, so one visit covers both ends of the age range.

Weka Park in Raumati Beach doubles as the sports-field hub, with a dog off-leash paddock and the Wharemauku Stream walk running past it. Waikanae Park is mid-rebuild through 2026: the existing playground stays open into 2026 while a new skatepark, play space and toilet block are built in stages, so check before driving out. A stiff nor'wester off the Tasman keeps most families on the sheltered inland reserves; when the wind swings south, Queen Elizabeth Park's wetland and forest-remnant tracks stay calm while the open beachfront plays take the brunt of it. Rebound Playland in Paraparaumu is the standing wet-weather call.
